We always want to practice retrieving pas balls/wild pitches with the same sense of urgency as if it were the winning run coming across the plate. Also, it is important to know the playing field before the situation occurs. Are you playing on grass or turf? Is there a warning track? Is the backstop brick or chain linked fence? It is important to know the answers to questions like these before the game starts!
Chapter 1 - Winning Run Coming Across The Plate
The catcher will start in his blocking position with all of his equipment on. The coach/partner will throw the ball to all parts of the backstop and the catcher will sprint to the ball, slide on his knees, and make an accurate throw that the pitcher can handle. It is important to give the pitcher a throw that is around waist level so that he can handle it easily. If the throw is too low to the ground it will be hard for the pitcher to catch the ball and tag the runner as he is sliding into the plate.
