BASEBALL CATCHER THROWING DRILLS

The most important thing to us should be making an accurate throw that the infielder can handle and apply a tag to the runner. Secondly, we should worry about getting rid of the ball quickly. It doesn't matter how hard we throw it, if the infielder can't catch/handle the ball we won't throw out any base runners.

Chapter 1 - Throwing to 1st

When we attempt to pick a baserunner off of first base we can choose to either throw from our knees or from our feet. Throwing from our knees creates an element of surprise helping us to catch the baserunner "sleeping". It requires more arm strength, which might make it more difficult for younger players. As always, we should choose how we throw to first base based on which way we can consistently make accurate throws and get the ball to our first baseman quickly. Also, it is best to practice throwing to first base when there is a left handed bater in the batters box.

Chapter 2 - Throwing to 2nd

Our catchers will start throwing to second base standing in an athletic position. Here we are focusing on our footwork and transfer. This is a simple drill that can help us consistently use proper footwork. Secondly, we will throw from our secondary stance with the ball starting in our mitt. This is a little more difficult than the first drill. Now we must focus on staying low and not standing straight up once we receive the ball. Lastly, we will throw to second base after receiving a pitch. We should focus on receiving the ball correctly and then, using proper footwork, get rid of the ball quickly.

Chapter 3 - Throwing to 3rd

Third base may be the most important base that we throw to. If we make a bad throw now, the runner will score! We like to practice throwing to third base when there is a right handed hitter standing in the batters box. We must do a good job making sure that our momentum is carrying us to third base and not into the third base dugout.
